This looks to be a pretty rare version of the 981.
My car looks a lot like it with the exception being my amber interior vs. the black interior.
Does anyone know if the exterior finish on this model is Black Basalt Metallic or just Black ?

Not particularly rare, at least not the more recent versions, including the 981. I had a choice of ordering one, but took an existing car. You could chose either black when ordering, so no answer there. There a couple of other little tidbits that come with the BE. I know there are several owned by P9 members, so perhaps they will chip in.

Yes I have one in a Cayman, either Black was available. Options are more expensive here in Australia, but over here it came with about $10,000 worth of free extras, probably the most expensive being the 20" Carrera Classic wheels. Lots of other bits a pieces, parking sensors, embossed Porsche head rests, aluminium trim around the windows at no charge (but you still had to order those), windscreen tinted band, door kick plate with "black edition", SoundPlus radio as standard, cruise control, bi xenon headlights, Porsche floor mats, sports design steering wheel, 14 way adjustable electric and also heated seats and I've probably forgotten a couple of smaller items. Cheers Les

I have a Black Edition Cayman. Many of the options depend on what you order. For example, mine
did notcome with PDK, PSE and Sport Chrono. I believe that the 20" Carrera Classic Wheels and black taillights are standard on Black Edition cars.
I read somewhere that the Black Edition cars were some of the last 981s to leave the factory. That may or may not be true but it is a nice story.

Many of the black edition Boxster's had those beautiful turbo wheels because the difference in cost from the Carrera classic wheels was not that much and many dealers took a vantage of that and ordered them that way

Wheels and tires make a huge difference with this model....for sure. I am so glad I dumped the original OEM wheels and tires. No wonder so many 981's ended up at Copart auctions...LOL ...especially the "S" model....which is accident prone IMHO ! Duh....I wonder why.....

I'm not sure of the actual date but they certainly came out during the last year of the 981, mine was manufactured on the 21st of March 2016 and delivered in late May, just before the end.

As far as "rare" goes....one must be aware that the 981 Boxster GTS edition (2016 only) is going to be a collector's car....no ?
I saw one the other day in Maryland....it was awesome....white.

Nope. There are lots of them. The collector cars are the one's that are made in limited numbers and/or the GT cars. The GTS is really an options package with 10 extra HP.

There are not "lots" of 981 GTSs. I think you mean that they were not restricted in terms of build numbers. Also, there was a GTS interior package that was not possible to get any other way.
I'm not sure Porsche speculation is a good business to be in in any case. Better to drive them and have fun.

Agreed. "Lots" is pretty imprecise. I suspect that most people would not think that there are lots of Porsches, period.
For fun I did a quick check on used 981's listed on the Canadian and US Porsche web sites. Results:
Cayman - 5 (Can) and 83 (US)
Cayman S - 5 and 67
Cayman GTS - 2 and 17
Cayman GT4 - 20 and 38
I wonder how many dealers (especially in Canada) are getting a bit antsy about the GT4's on their wintry lots, especially with a new one in the works.
To at least offer a token to the thread topic, there are 4 used Black Edition Caymans for sale in the US, none in Canada. They are rare, but not necessarily more valuable.

I have been thinking exactly the same thing - and wondering how they can still be offered above retail. If the new model has the 4.0 and unrestricted production the 981 variant is going to fall in value, and people who purchased them to turn a profit would have been much better with a GIC.
I think it takes "real money" and lots of patience to make money in the car collection business. But I'm just a guy without a TV who hasn't seen all the awesome shows about people who do I guess.
The data you put together is interesting. Thanks for doing that.
Edit: I realized after I posted you were talking about dealers and I was thinking about individuals.

New to the forum as I just bought my Boxster Black Edition a few months ago. Back to the original question of what was included, it also came with PCM Navigation in addition to what has already been listed.
